The Jim Haberl hut is Open!
It seems like it has been such a long road, but we have finally arrived. The hut is complete (enough) to open to the public. On Thursday, 28 June, we had an opening ceremony. Almost all of the Haberl family was able to fly up to take part, as well as key people from the ACC and the hut committee. It was a very moving day.
In the weeks leading up to the opening there was a mad flurry of activity to get the construction completed. Chris Kiely, Britt Beach, and Bob Woodhouse went in for 10 days to do the bulk of the finishing carpentry - the results are spectacular. Then the propane system was installed and the kitchen fitted out. The first group of climbers are already enjoying their stay...
Thank you to all the volunteers and donors who have helped make the hut a reality

Hut Installed, Exterior nearly complete
There has been so much progress over the summer it is hard to know where to begin. After the "big lift" at the end of May the weather closed in for all of June preventing any progress at all. Just as we began to despair however, a 7 week stretch of blue settled in and the teams got to work.
It took the better part of 2 weeks to install the support posts and floor panels, and then a series of work parties installed the walls, roof beam, roof panels, cladding, insulation... Many thanks to all the people who have given so generously of their time to work on the hut. It would have been impossible without you. Also, many thanks to Omega Aviation (www.omega-aviation.com) and our long-suffering pilot Nathan Dubeck for his patience, good humour, and professionalism. He has repeatedly gone the extra mile to support us and we are most grateful.
There is still much left to do, but the hut is now in place and weather-tight ready for interior finishing. Check out the Photo Album for a full record of the construction.

The Hut is On Site!
This month the hut (in its disassembled sections) was loaded onto a
huge truck and moved to the helicopter lift site at the bottom of the Ashlu River.
Then on Wednesday evening, May 25, the giant helicopter from Helifor arrived to do
the big lift up to the Serratus-Dione Col. It was quite a show.
Gary and Chris from Helifor orchestrated things, Gary on the receiving end up at
the col and Chris at the bottom. We had 6 lift packages, each weighing between
4000 and 6000 lbs. There is a short video here and
there are photos in the photo album.
This was one of our major milestones - now we just have to put it all back together...
There is still quite a bit of snow at the col, and the final work on the foundations
has not been completed, but we expect work to really begin in June.

PRESS RELEASE
3 June 2004
Construction of the Jim Haberl
Hut, Tantalus Range, BC
Construction of the Vancouver
Section's new Jim Haberl Hut is well underway. The hut is
being prefabricated by the 192 Airfield Engineers (Dept. of National
Defense) on their base in Abbotsford, BC. Members of the hut
committee have been very busy completing the engineering, applying
for the building permit, doing take-offs for the ordering of
materials, fine-tuning construction details and talking to
suppliers. This is all in addition to updating the website,
coordinating a raffle and handling all the finances. Many committee
members have also visited Abbotsford and assisted with the raising
of the wall panels. The roof panels will be completed in June,
followed by the installation of the windows and doors, building
paper and
metal cladding in early July. The hut foundations will be installed
in late July on the rock rib in the col between Mounts Serratus and
Dione in the Tantalus Range. The hut components will be trucked from
Abbotsford and flown to the site for assembly in early August. The
helicopter logging company, Helifor, has generously offered to do
the major heavy lifts as a community service. Omega Aviation Helicopters
will be used to lift people and crane panels into place. The
interior finishing work and installation of millwork will be
completed by club volunteers in late August/early September. If all
goes well, the hut will be ready for occupancy in early fall.
Throughout July, volunteers are most
welcome to work alongside the military personnel in Abbotsford for
just a few hours or a few days. Anyone interested should contact
Alastair Foreman at 604-904-0509 or info@jimhaberlfund.org
For those people planning a climbing
trip to the Tantalus area this summer, please be aware that a large
team will be camped in the col from late July to mid August, and
that construction of the hut will generate more than usual
helicopter traffic. This traffic will go from the Squamish Airport
to the col around the north side of Alpha, not through the Lake
Lovely Water basin, in accordance with BC Parks' Tantalus
Aviation Plan.
In anticipation of high helicopter
costs, the hut committee is running one last fund-raiser - a raffle.
The draw will take place at the club's Van Dusen meeting, the 'June
Social', on June 22. Tickets are $20 and can be
purchased through Liz Scremin at 604-921-2651 ahead of time or at
Van Dusen on the night of the draw. The prizes are numerous and
varied: (see below). Please consider purchasing a raffle
ticket. Alternatively, if people prefer to make a donation, cheques
(payable to the Alpine Club of Canada) should be sent to the Hut
Project Treasurer at 3991 Springtree Drive, Vancouver, BC V6L 3E2.
Tax receipts are provided by the ACC National Office for donations
over $10.
Many companies and organizations have
made generous donations of their time, products and services to make
the hut possible. The Jim Haberl Hut Committee would like to mention
the following folks: the 192 Airfield Engineers (for their enormous
skill and volunteer labour on the hut), MEC (for a $10,000
grant), Dick's Lumber (for discounted materials), Vicwest Steel (for
discounted metal cladding & roofing), Peter Taylor P.Eng. (for
donated engineering services), Euan McLean of Butterfield
Consultants (for donated quantity survey work), Neil Bennett and
John McDonald of Bennett Surveys (for donated land survey work), BHL
Holdings Ltd. (for a donated glulam beam), Weyerhaeuser (for
discounted materials), McGregor and Thompson Hardware (for donated
doors)... the list goes on and on.
The ACC-Vancouver Section and the
friends and family of Jim Haberl are extremely grateful for
everyone's help and enthusiasm. The hut will be a wonderful memorial
to Canadian climber and mountain guide Jim Haberl. ACCers are
encouraged to check www.jimhaberlfund.org for more information and
photos, plus watch for a progress report in the September Echoes.

Construction begins!
Things have moved rapidly in the last couple of months. The
most important development by far is the involvement of the 192nd
Airfield Engineers, who have taken on overall construction
responsibilities for the Hut. Under the leadership of Capt
Dale Thingvold and Lt Pascal Blanchette they have already finished
the floor assembly and much of the wall sections. Construction
is happening at their base in Abbotsford.
There are photographs
of the construction here.
March 2004
Update on the Hut
There is much to report on our progress with the Jim Haberl Hut.
We are on track to begin construction of the hut in the early summer
and fly it up
into the Tantalus Range in August. We have a detailed budget and have raised
most of the funds we need. Helicopter time looks to be by far the largest
expense - any ideas or contacts would be welcome.
Liz Scremin has done
an excellent job with the plans. If you have not seen them, they are on the
website here. The
outhouse is mostly built (and sitting in Ian McGillivray's back yard) and the
hut site has been surveyed and foundation footings designed.
We will
be pre-fabricating the hut in Vancouver, most probably in the yard of the
Seaforth Armoury at 1st and Burrard. We are also in the process of
contracting a professional construction manager who will oversee construction
in Vancouver and installation on site.
We are looking for people with
construction skills. If you think you can help out in June, July, and/or
August please fill out the info form here.
The
governance committee has expanded to include engineer Peter Taylor and
contractors Owen David and Colin Boyd. Their expertise is most
welcome.
There is an on-line calendar for the project here.
It is still pretty empty, but things will certainly be busy in the months
ahead, so please keep in touch.

Volunteers Needed: Outhouse Construction
Sat-Sun, August 23-24 in West Vancouver
The Alpine Club of Canada - Vancouver Section is looking for volunteers with
some skill and enthusiasm to assist with construction of the outhouse for
the Jim Haberl Hut. Volunteers with their own tools would be most
appreciated. The outhouse will be a 2-storey wood frame and steel clad
structure, with a fly-out barrel system. The work will be overseen by Ken
King and Ian McGillivray. For more information and to confirm the time and
location, call Ian at 604-988-3618.

Good news!
We have just received a letter in the mail from Mountain Equipment
Co-op, telling us that the Jim Haberl Hut Committee's grant application to
MEC's Community Fund was successful. We have been awarded the full amount we
applied for: $10,000. This is great. I want to thank Blair Mitten for all
the thought and effort he put into writing the grant application. I also
want to thank Tom Bell and Greg Miller for writing wonderful letters of
reference that no doubt strengthened our application. MEC granted funds to
only 8 out of 64 applicants, so we really are fortunate.
